The balance and scale industry seems to lag the technology curve so

balances designed with a standard RS-232 port to interface the balance

is you need to decide do you want RS-232 or USB, but not both.

The USB to Serial
Adapter kit for Sartorius Balances ( part # SARUSB) provides
the connection between USB and the RS-232 serial port of the
Sartorius balance. The kit consists of two cables daisy
chained together. The first cable is the specially
configured RS-232 cable 5 feet in length mated with an RS-232
to USB type A connector with a cable length of 1 foot.
Together your total cable length is 6 feet.

A virtual COM port is set up on the computer using the driver
that comes with the cable. The application program
running on the computer does not detect any difference between
this virtual COM port and a physical COM port, because the
actual functions are identical.
